Conclusion: five human rights principles for a just housing future

Abstract: This chapter identifies five guiding principles that must underpin human rights in moving towards a just housing future. First, human rights are forged from below in grassroots political claims and struggles. Second, human rights must be guided by a commitment to substantive equality and questions of distribution must be at the heart of its realization. Third, human rights must be decolonial in approach, and must be reparatory in their aims. Fourth, human rights must work in service of definancialization and decommodification, pushing back against visions which see everything as a commodity and insisting that some aspects of the world are instead public goods. Fifth, human rights must respect planetary boundaries and ecological limits, and take account of the fact that while human rights may be anthropocentric by definition, human life is situated within a web of relations that sustain and support it, and which accordingly need to be valued and protected.
