Abstract:
Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) plays a central role within the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) process, as it translates emissions and resource extractions into quantifiable environmental impacts through the use of characterization factors. The ReCiPe model is a well-established method for Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA). It offers two options for deriving characterization factors: at midpoint and endpoint level. ReCiPe includes 18 midpoint indicators and three endpoint indicators, whereas midpoint indicators focus on individual environmental issues, such as climate change or acidification, and endpoint indicators illustrate the environmental impact, or damage, on three areas of protection: human health, ecosystem quality, and resource scarcity. The ReCiPe model is currently being updated, its latest edition being the ReCiPe2016 model. Ongoing research aims to address limitations of the model by refining impact modeling, enhancing spatial differentiation, and incorporating new impact pathways.
