Abstract: Indigenous groups comprise over 370 million individuals across 90 countries, speaking more than 4,000 languages. Indigenous Peoples strongly identify with and are recognized as part of a specific cultural group that is non-dominant within their society. They have a profound connection to land and natural resources, distinctive social and political systems, unique cultures and languages, and a commitment to preserving their ancestral beliefs and way of life. Indigenous Peoples often face discrimination, political and social marginalization, and threats to their cultures and livelihoods. Key frameworks advocating for Indigenous rights include the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 169, which promote self-determination and free, prior, and informed consent in impact assessments. Additionally, the Guidelines for Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) of Products and Organizations further emphasize respect for Indigenous rights, although challenges in data reliability and awareness persist.
