Respect of intellectual property rights subcategory

Luigia Petti and Bianca Maria Tragnone

Chapter 141 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 525-528 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) concern the rights granted to creators, inventors, and innovators over their intellectual creations, which encompass a wide range of human creativity. The concept of IPRs was explored within the framework of the Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) guidelines. IPRs play a crucial role in driving economic development and recognize the importance of organizations such as the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in recognizing the ownership of creators. Furthermore, the assessment of IPR under the S-LCA was highlighted, underlining its alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 9. In conclusion, the importance of assessing the social implications of innovation was highlighted, as well as creativity through the lens of IPR.
