Social hotspot

Gabriella Arcese

Chapter 150 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 556-559 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: A social hotspot refers to a specific location or activity within a product's life cycle where social issues or risks are likely to arise. These hotspots are often associated with particular stages or processes in the life cycle. Hotspot analysis is a framework that allows for the quick collection and assessment of diverse information sources, which may include studies based on life cycles, market insights, scientific research, expert perspectives, and stakeholder feedback. This type of analysis can be performed using either quantitative methods, qualitative methods, or a mix of both and consists of eight essential steps that can be applied across different scales. Numerous methodologies utilize this combined approach to identify sustainability impacts and carry out actions for improvement.
