Chapter 151 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 560-562 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) increasingly incorporates Social Hotspot Analysis (SHA) to evaluate social impacts throughout product life cycles. SHA identifies critical social concerns by analyzing risks and opportunities, allowing companies to prioritize and strategize interventions effectively. It employs a multifaceted data collection process, integrating quantitative and qualitative indicators to assess social conditions. Despite its potential, SHA faces challenges such as data availability, subjectivity in indicator interpretation, and the dynamic nature of social issues. Companies can enhance their supply chain practices by engaging stakeholders and utilizing resources like the Social Hotspot Database (SHDB). As methodologies evolve, SHA is poised to become a vital tool for promoting ethical and sustainable business practices.
