Chapter 158 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 588-591 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Social risk assessment is a process of identifying, analyzing, and evaluating potential negative impacts of a project, policy, or program on human rights, social well-being, and the environment, which involves engaging with stakeholders, including affected communities, and taking their perspectives into account when assessing potential risks and impacts. The definition of social risk assessment varies across different organizations such as ISO 31000, International Finance Corporation, World Health Organization, and Guidelines for social life cycle assessment of products and organizations 2020. There are several methods for social risk assessment such as brainstorming, risk analysis, risk evaluation, perception survey, media analysis, and Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA). Companies or countries can identify social risks that may impact their business or activities by conducting a social risk assessment, examining their investment portfolios, analyzing their operations, and reviewing their policies and strategies.
