Stakeholder category

Lucia Mancini

Chapter 164 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 613-615 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This text introduces the concept of stakeholder categories within the framework of Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), emphasizing their vital role in assessing social impacts across a product or service's life cycle. Defined as clusters with similar interests, stakeholder categories are fundamental in the goal and scope phase of S-LCA, helping identify and engage relevant groups affected by an organization's activities. The UNEP methodological sheets recommend specific stakeholder categories, such as workers, local communities, value chain actors, consumers, society, and children. For each category, the text details key social aspects to be considered during the assessment, ranging from working conditions and labour rights to community well-being, fair competition, and child-friendly marketing practices. These stakeholder categories facilitate a comprehensive evaluation, contributing to the understanding and implementation of socially sustainable practices in organizations.
