Abstract:
In the realm of Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), two primary approaches are used for assessing impact categories (Social Life Cycle Impact Assessment – S-LCIA): the Reference Scale Approach (also known as Type I or Reference Scale S-LCIA) and the Impact Pathway Approach (also known as Type II or Impact Pathway S-LCIA). These distinct approaches serve different purposes for practitioners: 1 – the Type I is suitable when the goal is to depict a product system while highlighting its social performance or potential social risks; 2 – the Type II is employed when the intention is to forecast the outcomes of a product system, focusing on characterizing potential social consequences. Within the Type I approach, the Subcategory Assessment Method (SAM) has been developed to evaluate the compliance and performance of a specific subcategory within a product system or a process. SAM is designed to assess the social profile of organizations on a scale from A to D (or 1 to 4), based on the proactivity and context compliance level of the organizational social performance.
