Sustainable resource extraction

Chapter 172 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 649-650 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The global demand for resources increases every year. Resources are the basis for development and property and one pillar to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) developed by the United Nations (UN). It is clear that resource extraction has to be sustainable from a social, environmental and economic point of view. For stakeholders and customers, the environmental and social footprint of a product has to be taken into account like other characteristics of a product or service. Verification of the whole value chain is needed to enable benchmarking and is needed to incentivize the state-of-the-art and beyond state-of-the-art production pathways. The transformation of industries, including the sector of resource extraction, to sustainable industries that meets the requirements of society in terms of decarbonization and social aspects is only possible if all stakeholders are engaged.
