Transformation

Nils Jäger

Chapter 174 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 654-657 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Transformation is a process that describes an ongoing status of change beyond incremental improvements. It often has not only an economic and ecological impact on business models, value chains, or emissions, but also an impact on social aspects like employment or structural changes. Transformation processes are complex and are not a single line process influenced by various shareholders and targets. Politics and society often give an impulse for transformation processes. This impulse can be understood as a driver for the process and often enables an accelerated or decelerated transformation. Therefore, it has an impact on speeding up or even slowing a transition or influencing the way of transformation. Within the last decades, the speed of deep transformations has increased. Within the contribution, examples in the power production sector, automotive, and steel industry will be given.
