Abstract:
Resulting from a collaborative effort between the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC), USEtox aims to address the challenge of assessing toxicity impacts of chemical emissions. In particular, it provides decision-makers with comparative impact metrics that enable a holistic understanding of how potential exposures to humans and ecosystems originate, as well as how these exposure pathways can be systematically tracked and quantified. In this review an overview of the USEtox methodology and methodological advances is presented as well as research needs to address the growing demand to extend to various compartments alongside improving impact assessment models.
