Dynamic life cycle sustainability assessment

Hashem Amini Toosi

Chapter 45 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 158-161 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Dynamic Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (D-LCSA) is an approach that explicitly incorporates dynamic process modeling into LCSA given the temporal and spatial variations in the surrounding industrial, socio-economic, and ecological systems to address the possible changes that are plausibly connected to the time-dependent variations across the long lifespan of products and their external impacts. Both the Dynamic Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment and the Dynamic Life Cycle Assessment use the term “dynamic” to describe how the topic of the evaluation evolves over time. Since “dynamic” in this context usually refers to changes over time, the primary goal of a D-LCSA is to improve traditional life cycle studies by providing dynamic modeling techniques that include temporal and spatial variations of the assessment elements, either related to the subject of the assessment or to the context which can affect the assessment results over time. Therefore, given the temporal variations of the input data of the assessment model, the term “dynamic” also refers to a modeling approach where the output of the model at a given time is used as the input for the model at the subsequent time step. The important requirements for performing D-LCSA are access to reliable data and precise prediction models to assess the variations of the influential parameters in a D-LCSA.
