Chapter 50 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 175-178 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Input–Output Models (IOMs) provide a valuable complement to life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA). At the core, IOMs describe the interdependence between all productive sectors of an economy. The IOM concept rests on the idea that outputs of a specific economic sector may become inputs in another economic sector. The systematic and comprehensive documentation of these interdependencies is thus typically represented in an inter-industry matrix, where rows represent the outputs of an economic sector, while columns represent the inputs. By accounting for sectoral interdependencies among environmental as well as socio-economic variables, linking IOMs with LCSA can provide valuable insight into the sustainability assessment of new technologies.
