Abstract:
This entry details the third phase of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, namely the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) phase, that has the objective to translate the elementary flows associated with the life cycle of a given product or process into potential environmental impacts as well as into potential damage to selected areas of protection. Although LCIA is typically fully automated in LCA software, the knowledge of its main constituting elements is fundamental for LCA practitioners in order to ensure that the obtained results are reliable and in line with the goal and scope of the study. Several LCIA methods are available, differing in several aspects. Some of the most widely employed methods have been briefly reviewed in this entry. The possibility of LCIA methods being modified has also been highlighted. This allows for assessing the potential environmental impacts and/or benefits associated with new materials and substances or with materials and substances for which their contributions to certain impact categories are unknown or need to be updated.
