Abstract: Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are labels disclosing quantified environmental information about products. EPDs are Type III environmental declarations regulated by the ISO 14025. EPDs enable the comparison of the environmental performance of products by providing transparent, accurate, and relevant information needed to compare products. The data contained on an EPD is based on the outcomes of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). EPDs are developed based on Product Category Rules (PCR), a range of rules and guidelines intended for a specific product category that provide all the necessary information to develop an EPD clearly and transparently. EPDs can serve different purposes: provide quantified environmental impacts of products, facilitate the communication of the impacts in a standardized and transparent manner, and serve as a data source for conducting LCA studies.
