Equal opportunities: Discrimination impact subcategory

Arij Chabrawi

Chapter 72 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 271-273 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Discrimination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment toward a group or its members that is consequential for their outcomes based on characteristics such as race, gender, age, or sexual orientation, often stemming from fear and misunderstandings. Discrimination happens consistently in the labor market and in the workplace, being found in different work situations, economic sectors, and forms of employment, both in formal and informal economy, in developed or developing countries. On the other hand, equal opportunities policies at work are an important tool to protect workers against discrimination and inequalities. These policies seek to provide workers with equality of opportunities and treatment, such as equal remuneration for work of equal value, regardless of gender, race, religion, ethnicity, or any other individual or group characteristics a person may have.
