Life cycle costing

Chapter 99 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment, 2026, pp 366-369 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Life cycle costing (LCC) is an assessment tool for assessing all costs associated with a product throughout its entire life cycle from cradle-to-grave. While other cost assessments often focus on purchase prices and investment costs, LCC takes a long-term perspective. Thereby, different actors within the product's life cycle are considered. LCC can be a valuable tool for decision-making, allowing for the identification of the most cost-effective options and cost drivers. Applying LCC in parallel to the other life cycle approaches (life cycle assessment (LCA), social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) allows for the identification of trade-offs between the different pillars of sustainability.
