Abstract: This Handbook examines the regional dimension of Transformative Innovation Policy (TIP), a paradigm that seeks to reorientate innovation towards addressing interconnected economic, social, and environmental sustainability challenges. While TIP has emerged from transition studies and evolved beyond market and system failure logics, it has often remained “place-blind,” overlooking regions as distinct policy arenas. Regions, however, are critical sites where societal challenges intersect and where experimentation, governance, and policy alignment are locally interacting. The volume brings together global case studies and conceptual analyses to explore how sustainability imperatives reshape regional innovation policies, the specific challenges regions face, and the governance capacities required.
