Sustainable foodscapes: the transformation of public food systems

Abstract: This chapter aims to contribute to the themes of the book in three ways: (a) by exploring recent changes in the innovation studies landscape, especially the advent of societal challenges as innovation policy themes; (b) by examining the scope for and the barriers to the use of public procurement as a policy instrument to address societal challenges, using public food systems to illustrate the argument; and (c) by offering a new analysis of mission-led innovation policy in Sweden, where the national innovation agency (Vinnova) selected the national school meals system to hone its mission-orientated skills in a novel alliance with local municipalities to fashion more sustainable foodscapes.
