The privatisation of space?

Nicolas Peter and Douglas K. R. Robinson

Chapter 18 in Research Handbook on Privatisation, 2025, pp 357-374 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Since the dawn of the Space Age, space solutions have grown in terms of demand as well as applications and service providers. While at first the space domain was dominated by States competing to attain technical “firsts” driven by political motives, and achieving a military and economic edge, the past decade has witnessed a metamorphosis of the sector towards a greater initiative of private actors in what is often called “New Space”. This has been done in parallel with the transition from a phase of privatisation towards one of commercialisation. The role of the State in the space sector has therefore changed over time, and so have interactions with private actors. The interactions and dynamics are however different depending on the sub-sectors. This chapter explores the evolution of the space sector and of the relations between the public and private actors over time by looking at the domains of telecommunications, Earth observation, launchers, and space sustainability.
