Chapter 1 in Reimagining the Gendering of Sport, 2025, pp 1-15 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Women's sport is complex and rife with paradoxes. We explore these and highlight both the progress made—such as equal prize money, record-breaking viewership, and increased visibility for diverse athletes—and the persistent inequities in funding, pay, leadership, and opportunity. Using a critical feminist and intersectional lens, we examine how gender, race, class, ability, and sexuality intersect to shape the experiences of athletes in girls’ and women's sport, revealing the broader societal and structural barriers that sustain inequity. We also reflect on the lack of compliance with national laws mandating equity and limited gender representation in sport leadership positions. Concluding with a call to action, we encourage readers to reimagine sport and embrace the transformative power of sport to challenge injustice and create a more equitable future for athletes in girls’ and women's sports.
