Becoming a Black mermaid

Tiffany Monique Quash

Chapter 10 in Reimagining the Gendering of Sport, 2025, pp 150-153 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter examines my personal journey of how a single body disrupts the stereotypes of Black people (specifically Black girls and women) being unable and/or unwilling to swim and the multiple layers of how one's physical Black body challenges this narrative. Additionally, I tackle the juxtaposition of race, queerness, and body image while participating in the sport of swimming. This narrative concludes with me accepting myself as a thick Black Mermaid.
