Chapter 20 in Reimagining the Gendering of Sport, 2025, pp 246-248 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this chapter, I explore the intersections of gender, motherhood, and combat sports. I discuss the experiences and challenges of being a female athlete and mother in a male-dominated sport. I narrate personal hardships in my Brazilian jiu-jitsu journey, including uncertainty of the sport, gendered biases, learning to be a competitor, injuries, and juggling training with kids. I note how my identity as a mother and female athlete intertwines in my endeavors in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
