A dream reimagined: reclaiming my story

Stephanie Wheeler

Chapter 22 in Reimagining the Gendering of Sport, 2025, pp 253-256 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this narrative, I, the current women's wheelchair basketball coach at the University of Illinois, craft a story informed by my childhood as a disabled girl and basketball fan and how ableism, disability, and gender shaped my sporting dreams. I reveal how a national championship run by my favorite team led to feelings of exclusion in sport, and how accepting that I could be disabled and athletic led to my own belonging and creating belonging for others.
