The power and poison of achievement
Gloria H. M. Park
Chapter 23 in Reimagining the Gendering of Sport, 2025, pp 257-260 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In this narrative essay, I describe the journey of a young first-generation immigrant child and competitive figure skater. It captures common struggles associated with the development of racial identity and the experiences of racism in both sport and non-sport contexts. Finally, I explore how a dominant athletic and achievement identity can develop in the absence of self-worth, and the impact it may have on lifelong well-being and performance.
