The end of sport as we know it

Vikki Krane and Tanya Prewitt-White

Chapter 26 in Reimagining the Gendering of Sport, 2025, pp 296-310 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Women's sport is at a crossroads today. The current mania is juxtaposed with all-too-common reports of emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse. Such is the paradox of women's sport. Too many participants drop out before they can achieve their potential. Sex and gender expansive athletes are being kicked out of sport. Others, based on race, ability, and/or sexuality, are made to feel like outsiders or unwelcome intruders. We also reckon with the impact of the current political climate on girls’ and women's sport. Lack of rights for self-determination of identity and body autonomy creates unique challenges for participants in women's sport. It seems we can use the momentum of the moment and eschew the common sport narratives that perpetually marginalize people in girls’ and women's sport. We conclude with a reimagining of sport, one that challenges the binary sex division.
