Chapter 8 in Reimagining the Gendering of Sport, 2025, pp 126-144 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Restorative justice informed by feminist standpoint practices prioritizes the perspectives of women and marginalized groups who have experienced sexual misconduct. By combining these approaches and amplifying the voices of survivors in sport, we can effectively counteract the silencing often faced by survivors of sexual violence in sport. In this chapter, I first present the findings of the United States Soccer Federation's report led by Sally Yates, highlighting the specific harm caused by former coach Rory Dames. I then explore the benefits of addressing sexual harm through a feminist restorative justice lens, examine contemporary issues in sport related to sexual misconduct, and underscore the importance of listening to athlete survivors. I conclude with a reimagination of how feminist restorative justice can be an effective alternative when responding to misconduct in athletics.
