The fat “girl” playing tackle football with boys

Kasie Murphy

Chapter 9 in Reimagining the Gendering of Sport, 2025, pp 146-149 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, I recount my journey as a young fat “girl” navigating identity and physicality through tackle football with boys. I confront gender norms, embracing my body's size and strength. Despite societal pressures, football became integral, fostering self-discovery and resilience as I navigated who I was and wanted to be. This narrative explores the empowerment found in defying stereotypes, embracing living in a larger body, and redefining gender roles, both on and off the field.
