Renewable energy financial instruments

Caroline Orset

Chapter 100 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 393-397 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: A Renewable Energy Financial Instrument (REFI) is a mechanism designed to facilitate the financing of renewable energy projects throughout their construction and operational phases. Such instruments encompass diverse forms, including feed-in tariffs, governmental tax credits and incentives, power purchase agreements, bond financing, crowdfunding, and Renewable Energy Certificates. In this chapter, I analyse the factors influencing the effectiveness of these instruments, as well as the associated challenges and limitations.
