Renewable energy transition

Chapter 101 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 398-400 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Climate change has brought energy transition, as a concept, into sharp focus. There is a near-unanimous agreement among diverse stakeholders that energy transition is fundamental to climate change mitigation. Traditionally, however, energy transition was not aimed at addressing climate change. The historiography of energy transition shows that it has been influenced by a wide, dynamic range of factors. Although a subset of energy transition, this entry introduces renewable energy transition as a distinct concept. When situated differently, renewable energy transition is an effective tool for reducing global warming while avoiding the collateral issues that are associated with the broader concept of energy transition. Additionally, even though international cooperation is helpful in the renewable energy transition agenda, it is driven at the local and national levels. The composition and approach of every country or administrative region vary, and energy justice is intertwined with renewable energy transition.
