Rural electricity

Chapter 105 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 412-414 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Twenty-five percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions comes from the electric power sector, 27 percent from transportation, and 10 percent from agriculture. The goal of the Paris Agreement is to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. To achieve this goal, the Biden Administration established a long-term strategy (otherwise known as the “nationally determined contribution” or NDC) for the U.S. to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions by 50–52 percent below 2005 levels by 2030. This entry examines the benefits, paths, and challenges toward the implementation of the direction of rural electrification.
