Urban energy sustainability

Athari Abdulaziz Almutawa

Chapter 123 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 470-472 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In today's increasingly urbanized world, the intersection of energy economics and urban sustainability is pivotal. Cities are placing greater pressure on the environment and resources, necessitating a shift toward sustainable urban development. To ensure a high quality of life for current and future residents, a holistic approach that encompasses social, environmental, and economic aspects is essential. Efforts should also focus on reducing energy consumption while integrating renewable sources into city processes. Currently, cities are responsible for 70 percent of CO2 emissions and two-thirds of global energy usage, but there is an emerging goal targeting net zero emissions by 2050, indicating the rise of a novel paradigm in the energy economy, which will contribute significantly to combatting climate change worldwide. Urban planning informed by renewable energy integration becomes imperative in securing resilient futures for cities.
