Urbanization and energy economics

Chapter 124 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 473-475 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Global urbanization is accelerating, with two-thirds of the world's population expected to live in cities by 2050, driving economic growth but also increasing energy consumption and carbon emissions. The uneven relationship between urbanization and economic growth underscores the need for nuanced policies to mitigate social and environmental impacts. Sustainability is key, and cities play a central role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In the EU, the European Green Deal is spearheading sustainable urbanization and climate action, but challenges remain, including fossil fuel dependency and urban sprawl. Effective strategies require holistic approaches and innovative solutions for the transition to sustainable urban energy systems. This summary highlights the complex interplay between urbanization, energy, and sustainability, and the need to balance economic prosperity with environmental protection in an increasingly urbanized world.
