Abstract:
The shift towards renewable energy is undeniable, but coal-based power generation remains crucial in meeting energy demands. This entry examines the continued significance of coal in countries like India, where thermal power accounts for a substantial portion of the energy mix despite the rapid addition of renewable energy. Thermal power plays a critical role in meeting peak demands and supporting renewable integration. Additionally, coal's reliability and affordability make it vital for socioeconomic development in emerging economies. To remain relevant, coal-based power must adopt greener technologies, which have significantly reduced environmental impacts. A well-planned transition that embraces both coal and renewables is essential for energy security and stability. Coal's role in bridging the gap between current needs and future aspirations highlights its importance in the ongoing energy transition.
