Eco-industry

Bernard Sinclair-Desgagné

Chapter 25 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 92-96 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The eco-industry – also referred to as the environment or environmental industry, the environmental goods and services industry, or the cleantechs sector – consists of business enterprises which deliver goods and services for environmental protection or natural resource management. Several segments of the eco-industry – such as renewable energy and energy management – overlap with the energy sector; others – such as air pollution control, site remediation, hazardous waste management, and resource recovery – support the energy sector's compliance with environmental laws and regulations. The following features characterize the eco-industry: it is young and fast-growing, substantial in revenue and employment, largely driven by environmental regulations, highly segmented, innovative, oligopolistic with often a competitive fringe, increasingly globalized, and a regular target of industrial policy. Despite its size and economic importance, the sector remains largely understudied.
