Chapter 27 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 109-110 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The increasing trend of renewable energy development and consumption over the years has been commendable. Some scholars have paid attention to how this has affected developmental related variables like economic growth, health outcome, environmental quality and exchange rate. In this entry the focus is on unravelling issues related to studies that have analysed the effect of renewable energy on carbon emissions. The commonly held view is that renewable energies are clean and that they can reduce carbon dioxide emissions to promote environmental quality. However, it appears there is no consensus on the effect of renewable energy on carbon dioxide emissions since the literature on energy economics has thus far seen various arguments, opinions and evidences on the effect of renewable energy on carbon emissions.
