Electricity transmission and distribution losses in developing countries

Paul Adjei Kwakwa

Chapter 29 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 115-118 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Energy remains the backbone of economic activities. This necessitates economies to have an efficient energy sector. However, the electricity sector in many developing countries is characterized by high levels of electricity transmission and distribution losses. While technical electric power losses are inherent in the energy system, inadequate investment and routine maintenance, coupled with high power theft attributed to electricity bills and corruption, make the issue serious for developing countries. The negative effects emerging from high electric power losses include high energy poverty, stifling of economic growth, reduction in employment opportunities, reduction in business growth, and increased environmental pollution. Suggested solutions, including intensification of education on the effects of electrical power losses, increasing renewables in the energy-generation mix, and commitment towards adequate investment and routine maintenance, have been offered to help curb electricity power transmission and distribution losses in developing countries.
