Chapter 37 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 145-148 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The relationship between energy, economy, and environment—referred to as the 3E nexus—is crucial for sustainable development. This entry examines the historical and contemporary dynamics of this relationship, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in balancing energy consumption, economic growth, and environmental protection. It explores the evolution of energy use from ancient times to the Industrial Revolution, and its pivotal role in economic activities. The entry emphasises the environmental costs of energy production, particularly from fossil fuels, and advocates for a transition to renewable energy sources. The role of governments, international cooperation, and policy interventions in promoting sustainable energy practices is discussed, stressing the importance of integrated approaches and the need for global commitment to mitigate climate change and achieve the sustainable development goals.
