Energy Trilemma Index

Chapter 54 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 209-211 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Considering the trade-offs and interconnections among three pillars, namely energy security, energy equity and environmental sustainability, the Energy Trilemma Index offers a thorough evaluation of a nation's energy environment. It assists decision-makers, financiers and participants in the energy sector in pinpointing regions in need of development and comprehending the obstacles and possibilities associated with accomplishing an environmentally friendly energy transition. The index provides a comparative examination of energy sustainability across different countries by ranking them according to their accomplishments across the three pillars. Countries can track their progress and discover patterns in their energy strategy and overall performance by observing changes in the index over time. Thus, the World Energy Council updates the Energy Trilemma Index on a regular basis to take into account the most recent information and changing energy environment.
