Chapter 55 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 212-214 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Climate change is an ever-increasing problem that threatens the world. Climate diplomacy is almost same as environmental diplomacy. The Paris Agreement's central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping the global temperature in this century well below 2 degrees Celsius, which is already above the pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The agreement charts out a new course on the effort of global climate change mitigation strategy by engaging all nations for the first time for a common cause and undertaking ambitious efforts to combat climate change and adapt to its effects, with enhanced support to assist developing countries. It requires all parties to determine, plan, and regularly report on the nationally determined contributions that it undertakes to mitigate climate change. Approximately 194 countries have ratified the Paris Agreement. The emission targets for each nation are separately negotiated and are to be voluntarily enforced.
