Chapter 7 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 32-33 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This overview explores bioenergy, a renewable energy form derived from biomass, encompassing organic materials subject to biological decomposition. Historical biomass usage, ranging from traditional methods to contemporary technologies, is examined in the context of escalating fossil fuel depletion, climate change, and the EU's Green Deal. Various feedstocks, including agricultural products, household waste, and cellulose-rich materials, contribute to diverse bioenergy products like biogas, biodiesel, and bioethanol. Assessing energy return on investments (EROI) reveals varying efficiencies among bioenergy products, emphasising the importance of sustainable practices. The EU's reliance on bioenergy is scrutinised in light of negative externalities, necessitating sustainability criteria. Discussions on forest biomass utilization and the role of bioenergy in decarbonization illustrate polarised perspectives. While biomass is considered carbon-neutral, challenges arise in balancing ecological limits with energy demands. Future advancements in hydrogen-based technology promise efficient biomass utilization, prompting a strategic shift towards sustainable bioenergy sources to meet evolving energy needs.
