Abstract:
In this entry, we broadly discuss the growing concern of greenwashing behavior among companies as a major hindrance to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and net zero emissions. More specifically, we highlight the origin, essence, measurement, types, and methods of greenwashing behavior used by companies who make claims and provide assurances about their environmentally friendly approach to their product and services. Our entry also stresses the consequences of and ways to combat such behavior. Based on our discussion, we endorse more transparency related to the reporting of greenwashing behavior and several responsibilities of stakeholders in helping to reduce such behaviors and assist in achieving environmental sustainability in the truest sense.
