Pollution sphere

Florian Marcel NuȚă

Chapter 94 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 369-370 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Most of the planetary resources have been put to work to serve human growth and progress and valued depending on the stringency of the needs they satisfy. Humans have put themselves at the top of the complex biodiversity planetary system and rule from there without a clear sustainable vision. Most environmental topics also debate the effects of ecological disorder on humans. Recently, humans have realized their irresponsible behavior is coming back against them, creating vital risks and putting life on Earth as we know it under scrutiny. The growth paradigm is transforming under the influence of sustainability in the development paradigm. However, as planetary degradation continues, it may soon transform into a survival paradigm. The pollution sphere can be described as the total pollution resulting from humans’ actions that affect all parts of the planet, disturbing the natural equilibrium and creating the premises for the planet's reaction to adapting to the new conditions. There are three primary dimensions of the pollution sphere: environmental impact, the effects of changing conditions due to the planet's response, and the resilience actions taken by humans. All these features transform the planet and add a permanent new sphere to it: the pollution sphere.
