Chapter 97 in Elgar Encyclopedia of Energy Economics, 2025, pp 385-387 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The concept of the prosumer, introduced by Alvin and Heidi Toffler in 1979, describes an individual who produces and consumes their own goods or services, particularly in the energy sector. Prosumers actively generate their own electricity using renewable sources such as solar panels and wind turbines, transforming themselves from passive consumers to engaged participants in the energy market. This entry explores the evolution of the prosumer concept within the energy market, highlighting the European Union's climate goals and the rise of renewable energy prosumers. Key business models for prosumers include peer-to-peer (P2P) trading, prosumer-to-grid (P2G) models and organized prosumer groups (OPGs). These models facilitate energy transactions, optimize energy use and support the integration of renewable energy sources. The entry underscores the role of prosumers in achieving climate neutrality and the need for innovative regulatory and technological frameworks to support this transition.
