Introduction: what is energy innovation and why is it important?

Laura Diaz Anadon, Abhishek Malhotra, Ambuj D. Sagar and Elena Verdolini

Chapter 1 in Handbook of Energy Innovation, 2026, pp 1-8 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter outlines contributions in this Handbook of Energy Innovation from leading scholars that describe and analyze the nature of energy innovation, its patterns across diverse sectors and regions, and how such innovation has been shaped and shepherded. Furthermore, the chapter also lays out an agenda for future research. And, finally, it makes the case that these contributions should be of interest and utility to students, scholars, and practitioners across many fields, given the key and increasing role of energy innovation in advancing economic, human, and social development and addressing climate change and other societal challenges.
