Firms and energy innovation

Joern Hoppmann, Hauke Luetkehaus and Swantje Freund

Chapter 7 in Handbook of Energy Innovation, 2026, pp 103-119 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Firms, both incumbents and new entrants, play a crucial role for energy innovation, as they develop, commercialize, and adopt energy technologies. Therefore, understanding the drivers, barriers, and mechanisms of firm innovation is critical when seeking to accelerate the global energy transition. Against this background, in this chapter, we first describe the firm-external factors that may hinder or drive firms in the energy sector to develop and adopt innovation. Based on the observation that external pressures increasingly stimulate and require firm innovation in clean energy technologies, we then outline firm-internal barriers of energy innovation, and discuss governance structures and processes that help firms overcome the barriers. We conclude by providing a brief outlook and highlighting the need for future research.
