Autonomous vehicles and autonomous mobility

Abstract: Automated vehicles (AV) drive on public roads for some years now. Even though they are so far mostly part of pilot projects, many experts assume that at least certain forms of AV will be commercialized in the future. They are expected to bring profound changes to the mobility system and society as a whole. Against this background, AV have increasingly become the focus of TA in recent years. In this chapter, we elaborate on some specifics of a TA on AV. We show that AV and AD are umbrella terms for different technical variants of vehicles as well as for diverse ideas about mobility services enabled by them. AV have to be developed and mature within a mobility system that has grown over decades and is characterized by diverse regulations, expectations, routines, and corresponding path dependencies. Building on this, we will take a closer look at particularly relevant TA issues.
