Chapter 11 in A Modern Guide to the Social and Solidarity Economy, 2026, pp 228-252 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The social and solidarity economy (SSE) in Latin America exhibits distinct characteristics shaped by its historical evolution as an organized sector across diverse territories. These features are intricately connected to global challenges including economic restructuring and democratization. Despite its growing visibility within the region, the SSE continues to face significant limitations in terms of recognition, institutional support, and promotion compared to its development elsewhere. This chapter critically analyzes the contributions of the Latin American SSE to the global SSE movement, with particular emphasis on its transformative potential. It addresses four key areas of interest: (1) the relationship between transformative economies and the SSE in Latin America; (2) the role of the SSE as a driver of social transformation within the region, considering its multidimensional nature; (3) the interplay between the SSE and territorial and market dynamics; and (4) the principal contributions of the Latin American SSE to the global discourse on the SSE.
