Historical perspectives on the institutionalisation of the social and solidarity economy

Timothée Duverger

Chapter 3 in A Modern Guide to the Social and Solidarity Economy, 2026, pp 45-64 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter proposes a historical overview of the institutionalisation of the social and solidarity economy (SSE), adopting an international perspective. It retraces the developmental trajectories of the SSE with reference to the broader cycles of capitalism, while highlighting the institutional diversity which is sometimes underestimated as a result of the relative paucity of documentation. This international perspective allows for an exploration of the mediating role which the SSE plays between civil society, the market and the state, particularly in times of crisis. It also sheds some light on the complexity of North–South relations, a reality to which the SSE is not immune, in spite of the United Nations’ attempt to promulgate a universal definition of the term.
